Full details
The Puma Deviate Nitro 4 is a high-performance trainer designed for adult male runners seeking a versatile shoe for daily road training and race-day efforts. It excels by offering a lightweight, responsive ride through advanced foam technology and a carbon-composite plate, though runners who prefer a maximalist or highly cushioned feel may find its streamlined construction less plush than some competitors.

FAQs
Is this shoe suitable for trail running?
The Deviate Nitro 4 is designed primarily for road surfaces. While the PUMAGRIP is durable, it does not provide the lug depth or protection required for technical trail running.
Does this shoe have a carbon plate?
Yes, it features a carbon-composite PWRPLATE designed to assist with propulsion and energy transfer.
What is the heel-to-toe drop?
The shoe features an 8mm heel-to-toe drop.
Can I use custom orthotics with this shoe?
Yes, the provided insoles are removable, allowing you to insert your own custom orthotics if needed.
How often should I replace these shoes?
Like most high-performance trainers, it is recommended to replace them every 300-500 miles, depending on your running style and surface conditions.
Are these shoes water-resistant?
The mesh upper is designed for breathability, meaning it will likely let in water if you run in heavy rain or puddles.
Troubleshooting
Feeling pressure on top of the foot
Try a different lacing technique, such as the 'window lacing' method, to relieve tension across the bridge of your foot.
Outsole collecting small debris
Use a dull plastic tool or a stiff-bristled brush to clear pebbles from the traction grooves after runs on gravel or uneven paths.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Significantly lighter than previous iterations
- Highly responsive energy return for faster paces
- Excellent traction on various road surfaces
- Breathable design for long-distance comfort
Cons
- Design leans towards performance rather than soft comfort
- Carbon-composite plate may feel rigid for some beginners
- Limited to neutral pronation profiles
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure the best performance from your Puma Deviate Nitro 4, start by securing the lace-up fastening to match your foot shape—ensure the midfoot is snug but not constricting to avoid pressure points during long runs. These trainers are built for neutral runners; if you require significant arch support or motion control, ensure you test them with your specific insoles first.
To maintain the longevity of your shoes:
- Cleaning: Use a soft brush or damp cloth to wipe away mud and debris after each run.
- Drying: Air dry at room temperature away from direct heat sources, which can warp the foam or degrade the mesh adhesive.
- Storage: Keep them in a well-ventilated area to prevent odor buildup and allow the foam to decompress properly between runs.
