Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure you get the most out of your Karrimor Mount Waterproof Walking Boots, proper setup, understanding compatibility, and regular care are essential.
Setup & First Use
- Lacing: Before your first walk, take time to lace your boots properly. Start at the toes and ensure even tension throughout, finishing with a secure knot. Experiment with different lacing techniques to find what offers the best comfort and support for your foot shape. A common technique is to use a surgeon's knot at the ankle to lock the foot in place, preventing heel lift.
- Socks: Always wear appropriate hiking socks. Opt for moisture-wicking synthetic or wool socks over cotton, as cotton retains moisture and can lead to blisters.
- Break-in Period: Wear your new boots on short walks around the house or on easy trails before embarking on a long hike. This allows the boots to flex and conform to your feet, and for you to identify any pressure points.
Compatibility
- Sizing: These boots are designed for adult males. Please ensure you have selected the correct UK size for your feet. It's often recommended to try on boots towards the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen, and while wearing the type of socks you'd typically hike in.
- Terrain: Best suited for general walking, hiking on varied terrain, and light backpacking. While rugged, they are not designed for extreme mountaineering or heavy duty industrial use.
- Weather: Excellent for wet and moderate conditions, offering reliable waterproof and breathable performance.
Care & Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, especially after muddy walks, clean your boots. Remove laces and insoles. Brush off loose dirt with a soft brush. For stubborn mud, use warm water and a specialized boot cleaner. Avoid harsh detergents or hot water, which can damage materials and waterproofing.
- Drying: Allow boots to air dry naturally at room temperature. Do NOT place them near direct heat sources like radiators or campfires, as this can cause leather to crack and adhesives to fail. You can stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture and help them retain their shape.
- Waterproofing: Over time, the `Weathertite` treatment may need refreshing. Periodically apply a suitable waterproof treatment spray or wax (for leather sections) designed for breathable waterproof footwear. Always follow the product manufacturer's instructions.
- Leather Care: If your boots have significant leather components (as these do, with a leather/textile upper), consider using a leather conditioner periodically to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking.
- Storage: Store your boots in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Ensure they are completely dry before storing.
