Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
The Nike Pegasus Trail 5 Gore-Tex requires minimal setup. Simply lace them up to your preferred snugness, ensuring an even tension across the laces. This prevents pressure points and allows for natural foot flex during your run or hike.
Compatibility:
- Terrain: Best suited for moderate trails, gravel paths, light mud, and mixed road-to-trail routes. It is less ideal for extremely technical, highly rocky, or deep mud conditions.
- Socks: Pair with moisture-wicking synthetic or merino wool socks to maximize the shoe's breathability and keep your feet comfortable, even with the waterproof membrane. Avoid cotton socks, which retain moisture and can lead to discomfort.
- Weather: Designed specifically for wet, damp, and cool conditions. While usable in dry conditions, breathability might be a factor in extreme heat.
Care:
- Cleaning: After use, especially on muddy trails, rinse off excess dirt with cool water. Use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush) and a small amount of mild soap if needed to gently scrub away stubborn grime. Avoid harsh detergents or hot water, as these can damage the Gore-Tex membrane, outer fabric, and adhesives.
- Drying: Remove insoles and loosen laces. Stuff the shoes with newspaper or paper towels to absorb internal moisture and help maintain their shape. Allow them to air dry naturally at room temperature, away from direct heat sources (like radiators or direct sunlight), which can damage materials.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Ensure the shoes are completely dry before storing to prevent odor and mildew.
- Maintaining Waterproofing: The Gore-Tex membrane provides inherent waterproofing. Regularly cleaning the outer material helps maintain its performance. Avoid applying waterproofing sprays directly to the Gore-Tex membrane as it is already waterproof; these are typically for non-Gore-Tex materials or to replenish the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on the outer fabric (which can wear off over time). Info needed: [Specific guidance on DWR reapplication for the outer fabric if applicable, from Nike or Gore-Tex specific instructions].
