Setup: Molding Your Mouthguard (Boil-and-Bite Method)
- Boil Water: Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Do not use a microwave.
- Prepare Mouthguard: Carefully place the mouthguard into the boiling water for approximately `30-45 seconds`. The exact time may vary; observe for slight softening.
- Cool Slightly: Remove the mouthguard from the boiling water using tongs or a slotted spoon. Immediately immerse it in cold water for `1-2 seconds` to cool the exterior slightly, making it safe to handle but still pliable.
- Position: Carefully place the mouthguard into your mouth, aligning it centrally on your upper teeth.
- Bite Down: Bite down firmly, creating an impression of your teeth. Use your fingers to press the mouthguard against your gums and the front of your teeth, ensuring a tight fit.
- Hold: Maintain this position for `about 20-30 seconds` to allow the material to set.
- Cool Completely: Remove the mouthguard and place it in a bowl of cold water for `several minutes` to finalize the hardening process.
- Test Fit: Try on your new custom-molded mouthguard. It should feel snug and secure, staying in place even when you open your mouth.
- If the fit is not ideal: You can often repeat the molding process once or twice. Be cautious not to over-boil.
Compatibility
The Nike Alpha Mouthguard is generally compatible with most athletes. For individuals with braces, consult your orthodontist before use. It's designed for upper teeth protection.
Care and Maintenance
- After Each Use: Rinse your mouthguard thoroughly with cold water to remove saliva and debris.
- Cleaning: Periodically clean with a toothbrush and cool water, or a mild, non-abrasive soap. You can also use specialized mouthguard cleaning tablets as directed.
- Storage: Always store your clean and dry mouthguard in the provided case to protect it from bacteria, damage, and warping.
- Avoid High Heat: Do not expose your mouthguard to hot water (except during the initial molding process), direct sunlight, or leave it in a hot car, as this can cause it to warp or deform.
