Setup
- Select the Right Tools: You will need a drill for pilot holes and a socket wrench or driver with the correct size socket to match the hexagon head of the M6 coach screw. For M6 screws, a 10mm or 11mm socket is typically used.
- Pilot Hole (Timber): For timber applications, it is highly recommended to pre-drill a pilot hole. The pilot hole diameter should be slightly smaller than the core diameter of the screw (the diameter of the shaft without the thread). This prevents timber splitting, especially in hardwoods, and eases insertion. For an M6 coach screw, a 4mm or 5mm pilot hole is generally suitable, depending on the timber density. The depth should be slightly less than the screw's length.
- Pilot Hole (Masonry with Plugs): When fixing into masonry (brick, concrete), first drill a hole suitable for the nylon wall plug. The plug manufacturer will specify the correct drill bit diameter (e.g., 8mm or 10mm for an M6 screw plug) and depth.
- Insert the Screw: For timber, align the screw with the pilot hole and use the socket driver to turn the screw until it is firmly seated. For masonry, insert the nylon wall plug into the pre-drilled hole, then drive the coach screw into the plug until secure.
- Avoid Over-tightening: While the hexagon head allows for high torque, avoid excessive over-tightening, especially in softer timbers, as this can strip the wood fibers or damage the screw head.
Compatibility
- Materials: Primarily designed for direct fastening into timber. When used with nylon wall plugs, they are compatible with masonry materials such as brick, concrete, and blockwork.
- Tools: Requires a socket driver of the appropriate size for installation.
Care
The zinc plating on these coach screws provides inherent protection against oxidation and corrosion. No specific user care or maintenance is required after installation. However, ensure screws are stored in a dry environment prior to use to maintain their protective coating.
