Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting:
Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Fennel 'Bronze' prefers to be planted in its permanent position as it dislikes root disturbance. Ensure adequate spacing, allowing at least 60-90cm for mature growth.
Soil & Water:
This plant thrives in fertile soil rich in humus. While relatively drought-tolerant once established, it performs best with consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Care:
- Pruning: After the flowering period in late summer, cut the plant back to about 30cm from the ground. This tidies the plant and can prevent excessive self-seeding.
- Self-Seeding Management: If you wish to prevent the plant from self-seeding, deadhead the spent yellow flowers before they develop seeds. If growing exclusively for foliage, removing flower heads is recommended.
- Overwintering: Fennel 'Bronze' is a hardy perennial. In colder climates, a mulch of compost or straw around the base can offer extra protection.
Compatibility:
This plant is generally compatible with most garden plants in sunny borders. Avoid planting it too close to plants that require consistently dry conditions. It pairs well with herbs like rosemary, sage, and thyme, as well as flowering plants like Echinacea and Rudbeckia.
