These Forgefix Carriage Bolts are Zinc Plated, and ideal for timber to timber joining. They come complete with a hex nut and are fully threaded to 100mm. Also known as 'Cup Square Hex Bolts', the square underneath the Cup stops rotation of the bolt when tightening. Conform to DIN 603 and DIN 934 standards. Available in a comprehensive range of sizes to suit most applications. APPLICATION: Used mainly for fastening timber to timber and is extensively used for timber joist construction in house building and numerous decking applications. A Carriage Bolt, also known as a Coach Bolt or as a Fully Threaded Cup Square Hex Bolt, has a domed or countersunk head, and the shank is topped by a short square section under the head. The square section grips into the part being fixed (typically wood), preventing the bolt from turning when the nut is tightened. A rib neck Carriage Bolt has several longitudinal ribs instead of the square section, to grip into a metal part being fixed. Zinc coatings prevent oxidation of the protected metal to create a longer lasting finish. It does this by forming a barrier and by acting as a sacrificial anode if this barrier is damaged. Zinc oxide is a fine white dust that (in contrast to iron oxide) does not trigger a breakdown of the substrates surface integrity as it is formed. The zinc oxide, if left intact, can act as a barrier to further oxidation, in a way similar to the protection afforded to aluminium and stainless steels by their oxide layers.

FAQs
What does 'ZP' mean for these bolts?
ZP stands for 'Zinc Plated'. This refers to a protective coating of zinc applied to the steel bolt, which provides excellent resistance against rust and corrosion, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
What size drill bit should I use for an M10 carriage bolt?
You should use a drill bit slightly larger than the M10 bolt's shank diameter, typically 10.5mm or 11mm. This allows the bolt to pass through while still allowing the square section under the head to bite into the timber securely.
Can these bolts be used outdoors?
Yes, due to their zinc-plated (ZP) finish, Forgefix carriage bolts are designed to resist rust and corrosion, making them suitable for various outdoor applications like fencing, decking, and playground equipment.
What tools are required to install these bolts?
You will need a drill, an appropriate drill bit (e.g., 10.5mm or 11mm), and a wrench or spanner to tighten the M10 nut (typically 17mm or 19mm).
Do I need to use washers with these bolts?
While not always strictly necessary, using washers (especially on the nut side) is generally recommended. Washers help to distribute the clamping force over a wider area, preventing damage to softer materials and providing a more secure connection.
How many bolts and nuts come in a bag?
Each bag contains 10 Forgefix M10 x 280mm carriage bolts and 10 corresponding nuts, providing a complete fastening set.
Troubleshooting
Bolt head spins when tightening the nut.
Ensure the square section under the bolt head is fully seated and engaged with the timber. You may need to gently tap the bolt head with a rubber mallet to embed the square neck into the wood before tightening.
Bolt won't pass through the pre-drilled hole.
Verify that the drill bit used is slightly larger than the M10 bolt's shank (e.g., 10.5mm or 11mm). Clear any debris from the hole.
Nut is difficult to thread or tighten.
Check the bolt and nut threads for damage or debris. Ensure the nut is aligned correctly and not cross-threaded. In some cases, a small amount of lubricant on the threads can assist, but generally isn't necessary for new hardware.
Visible rust or corrosion appears prematurely.
While zinc-plated for protection, severe or prolonged exposure to harsh conditions can degrade the coating. Ensure the finish wasn't damaged during installation. For critical outdoor applications, consider adding a sealant or paint over the exposed hardware.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Corrosion Resistance: Zinc plating makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, protecting against environmental wear.
Secure Fastening: The square neck design prevents spinning, allowing for easy and strong tightening.
Aesthetic Finish: The dome head provides a smooth, flush surface, which is desirable for visible applications.
Versatile Applications: Ideal for joining timber, securing metal to wood, and general construction like fencing, decking, and playground equipment.
Complete Kit: Supplied with matching nuts, eliminating the need for separate purchases.
Cons
Requires Pre-drilling: A specific drill bit size is necessary for proper installation, adding an extra step.
Tool Dependent: Requires a drill and appropriate wrenches for installation, which may not always be readily available.
Length: The 280mm length may be excessive for thinner materials, potentially requiring cutting or additional washers for a tidy finish.
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup Instructions
Marking: Accurately mark the drilling points on both materials to be joined.
Pre-drilling: Using a power drill, create a pilot hole through both materials. The drill bit should be slightly larger than the M10 bolt's shank (e.g., 10.5mm or 11mm) but *smaller* than the square section under the head. This allows the square neck to bite firmly into the wood.
Insertion: Push the carriage bolt through the pre-drilled holes until the square section is fully seated against or slightly embedded into the timber surface. A light tap with a rubber mallet may be needed to fully seat the square neck.
Securing: Place the included nut onto the threaded end of the bolt. Hand-tighten first, then use an appropriate wrench or spanner (typically 17mm or 19mm for M10 bolts) to fully tighten the nut. Ensure the bolt head does not spin during tightening; if it does, the square neck may not be fully seated.
Compatibility
Materials: Best suited for timber, wood composites, and securing metal components to these materials. The M10 x 280mm size is robust for thicker sections.
Tools: Requires a drill, an appropriate drill bit (e.g., 10.5mm or 11mm), and a wrench or spanner (e.g., 17mm or 19mm for M10 nuts).
Care and Maintenance
Inspection: Periodically check bolted connections for any signs of loosening, especially in high-vibration or outdoor applications. Tighten as necessary.
Cleaning: The zinc-plated finish is low maintenance. For outdoor applications, a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth can remove dirt buildup and help preserve the coating.
Environmental Factors: While zinc-plated, extreme or prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals or very high salinity environments may eventually compromise the coating. In such cases, additional protective coatings or covers might be considered, though generally not required.
