Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting:
Choose a location that receives ample sunlight for the most vibrant leaf color, though it will tolerate partial shade. Ensure the soil is well-drained; amend heavy clay soils with grit or compost. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball, place the plant in the hole ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting.
Containers:
Use a good quality, free-draining potting mix. Ensure the container has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Care:
Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish. Once established, the Cordyline 'Charlie Boy' is very drought-tolerant and only requires watering during prolonged dry periods. Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer in spring and summer if desired, though it is not essential. Overwinter in colder regions by protecting the base or moving container plants to a sheltered location. Pruning is generally not required, but any dead or damaged foliage can be removed at any time of year.
