RIO Coloured Dacron Backing - Multicolor

Dacron backing is used as a reserve line on a fly fishing reel, attached to the main fly line. It provides extra line capacity to prevent a fish from running your entire fly line off the reel.

This RIO Dacron backing is available in 20lb and 30lb test strengths.

While Dacron is durable, it is primarily designed for freshwater applications. For saltwater use, it's recommended to rinse thoroughly with fresh water after each use to prevent corrosion and degradation.

Secure the backing to the reel's spool core and then wind the line onto the reel, ensuring it is packed evenly. Once the desired amount of backing is spooled, attach your fly line to the end of the backing.

A hollow core means the center of the braided line is empty. This makes it easier to pass the tippet or another line through it for creating splices or tying specific types of knots.

The amount of backing needed depends on the type of fishing. For general trout fishing, 50-100 yards is common. For larger game fish or situations with long runs, 200 yards or more might be advisable.

RIO Dacron backing is specifically designed for *minimal* stretch, which is a desirable characteristic for better line control and hook setting. It is not designed to be stretchy.

Ensure the Dacron backing and fly line are dry before attempting to knot. Use a sufficiently strong knot like the Albright or surgeon's knot and pull it tight. For difficult knots, a 'nail knot' with a knot-tying tool can be more effective.

Ensure the backing is spooled evenly onto the reel. Avoid overfilling the reel. When casting or retrieving, pay attention to how the line is feeding off and onto the spool to prevent loops.

Inspect the entire length of the backing for any signs of damage. If significant fraying or abrasion is noted, it is recommended to replace the backing to prevent line failure during a fight.

The hollow core is designed for easy splicing or knotting. Ensure you are using an appropriate knot and have enough backing length to create a secure connection. Practice tying the knot on a spare piece of line if needed.
