Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
- Adjust Straps: Before your first wear, place your foot in the sandal and adjust each of the three buckles so that the straps are snug but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger underneath each strap easily. The wide backstrap is essential for keeping your heel secure and preventing your foot from sliding forward.
- Break-In Period: Birkenstock sandals require a break-in period. Start by wearing them for short periods (1-2 hours) daily. Gradually increase wear time over a few weeks. This allows the cork footbed to soften and mold to the unique contours of your feet, providing personalized support.
Compatibility
These sandals are compatible with a wide range of casual attire, from shorts and jeans to summer dresses. Their adjustable fit makes them suitable for various foot widths, as the buckles allow for customization. They are generally recommended for daily wear, light walking, and situations where prolonged standing is expected.
Care
- Cleaning the Birko-Flor® Upper: Wipe the straps with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Allow them to air dry away from direct sunlight.
- Cleaning the Footbed: Gently clean the suede lining of the footbed with a soft brush (like a suede brush) to remove dirt and restore the nap. For deeper cleaning, specialized cork footbed cleaners are available. Avoid harsh chemicals or excessive scrubbing.
- Cork Footbed Protection: To prolong the life of the cork, periodically apply a thin layer of cork sealer. This helps prevent the cork from drying out and cracking.
- Avoid Extreme Conditions: Do not expose your sandals to extreme heat (e.g., leaving them in direct sun in a hot car) or prolonged immersion in water, as this can damage the cork and adhesives. If they get wet, air dry them naturally, away from heat sources.
