By drawing on elegant simplicity and modest aesthetics, Fukasawa has created a pendant that strikes harmony with any environment it illuminates. A custom LED light source and diffuser are concealed within the acrylic (PMMA) diffuser, providing both a soft, diffused glow and a clean design. The steel shade is also coated with a high-gloss finish to further enhance the sleek simplicity of this modern pendant. The Pao collection of lamps is an exciting collaboration with established Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa. Named after the soft, glowing shape of traditional Mongolian Pao tents illuminated at night-time, Fukasawa set out to encapsulate the same atmospheric warmth and friendliness in the Pao Steel Pendant. Pao draws on Fukasawa’s aesthetic of beautiful simplicity; creating an everyday object that draws on design values existing in the natural world. By keeping the aesthetics modest and simple, he brings the design into harmony with its environment, reinforcing his primary intention of making the atmosphere pleasant and comfortable. Thanks to developments in the latest LED-bulb technology, the light source can be concealed from view within the shade, which is closed off with high-quality Acrylic (PMMA) diffuser, resulting in a clean and simple design with no visual intrusions. The Pao pendant was designed by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, one of the biggest names in contemporary design who is working with Hay for the first time. To design Pao, Naoto Fukasawa was inspired by Mongolian yurts which cast a spellbinding light at night when illuminated from within. The powder-coated steel lampshade has a high-gloss finish that reflects light. The underside of the lampshade is closed off by a PMMA diffuser disc which hides the light source and provides optimal lighting: homogeneous and non-dazzling. The love that designer Naoto Fukasawa has for simple, beautiful things, for all that's universal and emanates from everyday life, is evident in this project. The functionality and deliberate simplicity of the Pao Steel pendant make it suitable for a wide range of spaces and uses, in both home and corporate environments.
