FAQs

When is the best time to plant bare-root peonies?

The ideal times for planting are in the Autumn or early Spring.

How deep should I plant the roots?

The 'eyes' or buds should be positioned 2-3cm below the soil level.

Can I move my peony after it has been planted?

Peonies do not like to be disturbed. It is best to choose a permanent location and avoid moving them once established.

Do peonies require a lot of maintenance?

Once established, they are remarkably easy to care for and require very little maintenance.

What should I plant near my Alex Fleming peonies?

They pair beautifully with other classic garden plants such as roses, irises, and delphiniums.

Troubleshooting

The peony has leaves but is not producing flowers

This is usually caused by planting the 'eyes' or buds too deep. Ensure they are no more than 3cm below the soil surface.

Blooms are drooping or falling over

Peony heads can be very heavy. Use a peony ring or garden stakes to provide physical support for the stems before the flowers fully open.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Highly fragrant and showy bloom quality
Low maintenance once fully established

Cons

Does not respond well to transplanting
Requires specific planting depth for optimal flowering
Does not bloom immediately upon planting

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To successfully plant your bare-root peony, follow these guidelines:

Timing: Plant in Autumn or early Spring when the soil is workable.
Location: Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil.
Planting Depth: This is critical. Position the eyes (buds) exactly 2-3cm below the soil level. Planting too deep will result in lush leaves but zero flowers.
Spacing: Give them space. Plant each root 60-90cm apart to allow for mature growth and adequate airflow.
Initial Care: Water thoroughly immediately after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
Maintenance: Apply a light mulch in Spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid moving the plant once it has settled, as it resents root disturbance.
