Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup & Adjustments
- Unpacking: Unpack the jacket from its stowed pocket. It will regain its shape quickly.
- Adjusting the Hood: Use the two-way adjustment cords to cinch the hood around your head for a snug fit. The laminated visor helps keep rain off your face. When not needed, you can roll and store the hood using the simplified cord and hook design.
- Cuffs: Secure the cuffs using the hook-and-loop closures to prevent water from running down your arms and to seal out drafts.
- Hem: Use the drawstring at the hem to cinch the jacket for a tighter fit, preventing wind and rain from entering from below.
Compatibility
This jacket is designed as an outer shell. It's compatible with various layering systems:
- Base Layers: Wear over moisture-wicking base layers for active use.
- Mid-Layers: For colder conditions, layer over fleece jackets or lightweight insulated jackets for added warmth, as the Torrentshell 3L is not insulated itself.
Care Instructions
Proper care will maintain the jacket's waterproof and breathable properties, as well as its PFAS-free DWR finish:
- Preparation: Close all zippers (front, pit zips, pockets) and fasten all hook-and-loop closures before washing.
- Washing: Machine wash warm (up to 40°C/104°F) on a gentle cycle. Use a technical outerwear cleaner (e.g., Nikwax Tech Wash or Granger's Performance Wash). Avoid standard detergents, fabric softeners, bleach, or stain removers, as these can damage the DWR and membrane.
- Rinsing: Ensure the jacket is thoroughly rinsed to remove all cleaner residues.
- Drying: Line dry, or tumble dry on a low heat setting. Tumble drying on low heat can help reactivate the DWR finish. Avoid high heat.
- DWR Reapplication: If water stops beading up on the fabric, even after washing and tumble drying, you may need to reapply a new PFAS-free DWR treatment. Follow the instructions on your chosen DWR product.
