Full details
The Merrell Nova 4 Trainers are designed for active men who need a versatile shoe capable of transitioning from rugged trail running to casual daily wear. Featuring advanced waterproof technology and a specialized grip outsole, these shoes provide reliable comfort and traction in various environments. While they excel in durability and performance, users should note that the waterproof membrane, while effective at keeping water out, can reduce overall breathability compared to non-waterproof summer trainers.

FAQs
Are these shoes machine washable?
No, machine washing can damage the waterproof membrane and the foam construction. Use a brush and damp cloth to clean instead.
How should I dry these if they get completely wet?
Remove the footbed and stuff the shoes with newspaper or a dry towel. Let them air dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat.
Are the insoles replaceable?
Yes, the shoe features a removable EVA foam footbed that can be replaced with your own custom orthotics if preferred.
Is the Merrell Nova 4 good for road running?
While capable of road use, the Quantum Grip outsole and trail-specific geometry perform best on unpaved, uneven, or wet terrain.
Does the sizing run true to size?
Yes, they generally follow standard adult UK sizing, but if you intend to wear thick hiking socks, consider if you need extra room.
Can these be worn in winter?
The water-resistant features make them suitable for light winter conditions, though they are not insulated for sub-zero temperatures.
Troubleshooting
Footbed feels loose or shifts while running
Ensure the 50% recycled EVA footbed is properly seated flat against the base of the shoe. If it persists, remove and clean debris from the inner sole cavity.
Water entering through the top of the shoe
Ensure that your pants or gaiters are covering the opening of the shoe. The waterproof membrane is effective, but it cannot prevent water from entering over the collar.
Pros and Cons

- Excellent waterproofing for wet weather performance
- High-traction rubber outsole ideal for technical trails
- Lightweight cushioning provides all-day comfort
- Versatile aesthetic suitable for trail and casual settings

- Waterproof membrane may feel warmer than standard mesh in hot climates
- Not intended for heavy-duty backpacking or mountaineering
- Requires break-in period for optimal foam comfort
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To maximize the lifespan of your Merrell Nova 4 trainers, ensure the laces are adjusted to lock your heel firmly in place without cutting off circulation. Because these contain a waterproof membrane, avoid cleaning them in a washing machine, as this can damage the structural integrity of the seal. Instead, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. If the shoes become soaked, remove the removable EVA footbed and allow them to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources like radiators, which can cause the adhesives to degrade.
