Product Information

Full details

The JVSURF Long Throw Gate Lock is designed for enhanced security on external doors, gates, and sheds. Its primary benefit is robust double-locking functionality with keys operable from both sides, offering peace of mind. A minor consideration is that the black resin coating, while durable, may show wear over time with heavy use. Key features include a stainless steel bolt with a 2-1/2" throw, no-mortising installation, and weather-resistant construction.

FAQs

What is the bolt throw distance?

The bolt has a throw (travel distance) of 2-1/2 inches (approximately 63.5mm).

Does this lock require a hole to be drilled through the door?

No, this is a rim lock designed for surface mounting. It does not require mortising, though small pilot holes for screws are needed.

How many keys are supplied with the lock?

The lock comes with 5 keys.

Is this lock suitable for exterior use?

Yes, it is constructed with stainless steel and a weather-resistant epoxy black resin coating designed to resist rust and environmental damage.

What is the cylinder length?

The keyed cylinder length is 70mm.

Can this lock be used on any type of door?

It is designed for rim mounting on gates, sheds, or exterior doors where surface application is suitable. Ensure the door thickness and alignment are compatible with the bolt throw.

What maintenance is required?

Periodic cleaning with a damp cloth and occasional lubrication of the key cylinder with a graphite lubricant are recommended.

Troubleshooting

Lock is stiff or difficult to operate.

Ensure the strike plate is perfectly aligned with the bolt. Check for any obstructions. Lubricate the key cylinder with a graphite-based lubricant.

Bolt does not fully extend or retract.

Verify that the door/gate and frame are not warped or misaligned. Check that the strike plate is positioned correctly and allows full bolt travel. Ensure no debris is inside the mechanism.

Screws do not tighten securely.

Ensure you are using the correct size pilot holes for the screws. If mounting into soft wood, consider using longer screws or wood inserts.

Lock is difficult to key lock/unlock from one side.

Confirm that the bolt is fully retracted and the door is properly closed and aligned. Excessive force is not recommended; check for binding.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Easy to install with no mortising required.
  • Durable, weather-resistant construction for outdoor use.
  • Double-locking mechanism enhances security.
  • Long throw bolt provides a secure engagement.
  • Comes with 5 keys for convenience.

Cons

  • Black resin coating may show wear over time.
  • Primarily designed for surface mounting.
  • Cylinder length may not be suitable for all door thicknesses without adjustment.
  • Requires a compatible strike plate for proper function.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Position the Lock: Determine the desired mounting location on your door or gate and the corresponding strike plate position on the frame or post.
  2. Mark and Drill: Mark the screw hole locations for the lock housing and strike plate. Drill pilot holes as necessary.
  3. Mount the Lock Housing: Secure the lock housing to the surface of the door or gate using the provided screws.
  4. Mount the Strike Plate: Attach the strike plate to the frame or post, ensuring it aligns correctly with the bolt.
  5. Test Operation: Insert a key and operate the bolt to ensure smooth locking and unlocking.

Compatibility:

  • This lock is designed for rim mounting, meaning it attaches to the surface of the door or gate, not recessed within it.
  • Requires a corresponding strike plate (not always included, verify contents) that aligns with the 2-1/2" throw bolt.
  • Suitable for doors or gates with a minimum thickness that allows the bolt to engage the strike plate effectively. The 70mm cylinder length is a key dimension to consider.

Care:

  • Clean the lock periodically with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and debris.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, which can damage the epoxy coating.
  • Periodically test the lock's operation to ensure it remains free of obstruction.
  • Lubricate the key cylinder sparingly with a graphite-based lubricant if stiff operation is noted.
