The Park Tool HCW-5 is a professional-grade, double-ended spanner designed for bicycle mechanics and enthusiasts tasked with adjusting cup-and-cone bottom bracket lockrings. Its primary benefit lies in its dual-sided design, which offers two distinct hook configurations for secure engagement on notched lockrings; however, users should be aware that this tool is strictly for bottom bracket lockrings and is not compatible with fixed gear lockrings.

No, the HCW-5 is specifically designed for cup-and-cone bottom bracket lockrings. For fixed gear lockrings, use the Park Tool HCW-17.
The HCW-5 is designed to fit lockrings with a maximum outside diameter of 46mm.
No, this tool is intended for cup-and-cone style lockrings, not the internal splines found on modern cartridge bottom brackets.
Simply wipe it clean with a rag after use. Its nickel plating is naturally resistant to rust, but avoiding moisture will keep it in peak condition.
The two sides offer versatility for different styles of lockrings; one side uses a single hook for general notched rings, while the other provides a 3-notch grip for better leverage.
Ensure the lockring is clean of debris and that you are using the correct end of the spanner for your specific lockring design.
Apply a high-quality penetrating oil to the lockring threads and allow it to sit for 15 minutes before attempting to loosen again.
The HCW-5 requires no assembly; it is ready to use immediately. It is compatible with cup-and-cone bottom bracket lockrings that fall within the 40mm to 46mm diameter range. To care for the tool, wipe it down with a clean, dry rag after use to remove grease and debris. While nickel-plated, keeping the tool in a dry environment will extend its life. Do not use the tool as a hammer or pry bar, as this can deform the delicate hook geometry required for precision engagement.
