Full cheeks assist with steering, whilst the lozenge prevents the 'nutcracker' effect of a single joint. Shanks on the bit create a positive action against the horse's cheeks when asked to turn. This design also prevents the bit being pulled through the horse's mouth and the brass material encourages acceptance whilst the lozenge prevents the nutcracker effect of a single joint.
