Setup, Compatibility & Care
When planting your Ceanothus, ensure the site offers excellent drainage. If your soil is heavy clay, incorporate grit or organic matter into the planting hole to improve aeration.
Planting Steps:
- Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball.
- Position the plant at the same depth it was in the nursery pot.
- Backfill with native soil mixed with a small amount of compost.
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
Care Instructions:
- Pruning: Trim lightly immediately after flowering concludes to maintain shape and prevent the shrub from becoming 'leggy'. Avoid cutting into old wood.
- Watering: During the first year, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
- Protection: In regions prone to extreme frost, use horticultural fleece during the first winter to shield the foliage.
