Setup, Compatibility & Care
Getting the best results from your Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback treatment involves proper preparation, correct application, and simple aftercare.
Preparation
- Clean the Surface: Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and free from dirt, mould, algae, or loose flakes of old paint/treatment. Use a stiff brush or suitable timber cleaner if necessary.
- Remove Loose Material: Scrape off any peeling or flaking old finishes. For best results, lightly sand rough areas.
- Repair Wood: Fill any cracks or holes with appropriate wood filler if needed, and allow to dry.
- Stir Thoroughly: Before and during use, stir the contents of the tin well. This ensures an even colour and consistency.
Application
- Application Tools: Use a good quality exterior brush or a roller.
- Apply Evenly: Apply 2 coats evenly along the grain of the wood. Ensure good coverage, especially on end grain.
- Drying Time: Allow 2-4 hours between coats and before exposing to heavy rain. Optimal conditions (moderate temperature, low humidity) will aid drying.
- Avoid Drips: Pay attention to avoid drips and runs, especially on vertical surfaces.
Compatibility
- Suitable For: Rough sawn exterior timber such as garden fences, sheds, and pergolas.
- Not Suitable For: Smooth planed timber, decking, garden furniture (where a more durable, non-flaking finish is usually preferred), or interior use.
Care & Storage
- Tool Cleaning: Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use with warm water and detergent.
- Product Storage: Store the tin in a dry, frost-free environment, away from direct sunlight, and ensure the lid is tightly sealed to preserve the remaining product.
- Disposal: Dispose of leftover product and cleaning waste responsibly, following local regulations.
