Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing Indoors (March-April):
- Sow seeds 2.5cm (1 inch) deep in clean pots or module trays filled with firm, pre-watered compost.
- Maintain a warm environment with temperatures between 18-21°C (65-70°F).
- Ensure the soil remains consistently moist.
Sowing Outdoors (May):
- Sow seeds 2.5cm (1 inch) deep directly into their final harvest position.
- Plant in blocks, with seeds spaced 45cm (18 inches) apart.
- Water well after sowing to establish the plants.
- Keep the soil moist at all times.
Planting Out (May onwards):
- Harden off young plants gradually before transplanting.
- Plant out in blocks, a minimum of 4 plants by 4 plants.
- Ensure spacing of 45cm (18 inches) between plants and 45cm (18 inches) between rows.
- Protect plants from frost if planting out before the risk has passed, using horticultural fleece.
Tips for Success:
- Isolation: To prevent cross-pollination, do not grow other varieties of sweetcorn nearby. 'Mirai Picnic' should be isolated from other types.
- Protection: Use horticultural fleece for early plantings to guard against frost and wind.
- Mulching: Mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Support: If roots become exposed, add more soil to cover them.
Harvesting:
Harvest when the tassels at the top of the cobs have turned brown and the kernels appear creamy when pierced.
