FAQs
Are the Merrell Moab 3 shoes waterproof?
The Moab 3 features a pigskin leather and mesh upper which is breathable; while durable, it is not inherently waterproof unless treated with a protective spray.
How do I clean the suede parts of the shoe?
Use a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt. If deeper cleaning is needed, use a specialized suede cleaner and allow them to air dry.
Can I use these for long-distance backpacking?
Yes, the Moab 3 is designed for durability and support, making it suitable for moderate backpacking, though comfort may vary based on pack weight.
What is the primary benefit of the Vibram TC5+ sole?
The Vibram TC5+ is designed for high-performance grip and durability across a variety of terrains, ensuring stability on slippery or uneven surfaces.
Are the materials sustainable?
Yes, the Moab 3 incorporates 100 percent recycled laces, webbing, and mesh lining.
Troubleshooting
The leather feels stiff after being wet
Let the shoes dry naturally at room temperature away from heat sources, then use a suede brush to restore the nap.
Accumulation of debris inside the shoe
Ensure the bellows tongue is pulled taut when lacing up and check that the laces are securely fastened to keep the seal tight.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Excellent traction provided by Vibram TC5+ outsoles
- Durable suede construction ensures a long service life
- Bellows tongue effectively prevents debris entry
- Includes sustainable materials like recycled laces and lining
Cons
- Suede material is harder to clean than full synthetic options
- Heavier feel compared to dedicated ultralight trail running shoes
- May require a short break-in period for the leather to soften
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure the longevity of your Merrell Moab 3s, follow these guidelines:
- Break-in: Wear the shoes around the house or on short walks to allow the leather to conform to your foot shape before tackling long-distance hikes.
- Cleaning: After use, brush off dried mud with a soft brush. For the suede components, use a dedicated suede cleaner and avoid submerging the shoes in water.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause the leather to stiffen or crack over time.
- Maintenance: If the water-repellent finish wears off, apply a standard leather-safe waterproofing spray to help protect the upper from moisture.
