Insert the chisel into the guide, with the bevel facing down. Adjust the guide to the desired angle, and ensure the bevel rests flat against the sharpening stone.

Apply a small amount of honing oil to the stone before each use, enough to lubricate the surface.

Re-oil the stone approximately every third stroke while sharpening.

Most chisels are sharpened at around 25-30 degrees. The honing guide helps maintain this angle.

After sharpening, drag the chisel once across the stone with the bevel side up to remove any created burrs.

Wipe the stone clean with a rag and apply more oil.

It is recommended to use honing oil, as water can cause the stone to rust and may not provide adequate lubrication.

You may need to start with a coarser grit stone or have the chisel professionally sharpened to repair significant damage. Start at a low angle to re-establish the primary bevel.

Check if the chisel is inserted into the honing guide correctly, ensuring the bevel is flat against the stone. Use enough pressure when sharpening. The stone may need to be dressed or replaced.

Apply oil sparingly, and spread it with your finger or a clean cloth.

Make sure the chisel is properly secured in the honing guide and tighten the securing mechanism if applicable.
