Full details

The RST Margin Trowel (RTR103AS) is a precision tool specifically designed for professional bricklayers, plasterers, and DIY enthusiasts who require a reliable instrument for finishing cement and plaster edges in tight spaces. Its primary benefit is the combination of a high-durability carbon steel blade and an ergonomic soft-touch grip, which significantly reduces hand fatigue during repetitive tasks; however, users should note that the 130 x 40mm size is optimized for small-area detailing rather than large-scale surface application.

FAQs

What is the primary use of a margin trowel?

A margin trowel is used for patching, small area plastering, and working in tight spaces where a full-sized trowel cannot reach.

Is the blade stainless steel?

No, this model features a carbon steel blade, which is known for its strength and durability but requires proper cleaning to prevent rust.

Can I use this for mixing large quantities of cement?

No, this trowel is intended for small batches and detailing; it is not suited for mixing large quantities of heavy concrete.

How do I store the trowel safely?

Store it in a cool, dry place, ideally hanging or lying flat, ensuring the blade is protected from moisture.

Is the handle replaceable?

The handle is permanently fixed to the tang for maximum durability, so it is not designed to be replaced by the user.

Troubleshooting

Blade showing signs of surface rust

Gently scrub the affected area with a fine-grade abrasive pad or steel wool, then wipe clean and apply a thin layer of oil.

Handle feeling loose

Check the tang connection point for debris; if the metal assembly is failing, discontinue use to avoid injury.

Material sticking to the blade

Ensure the blade is kept clean and consider wiping it with a damp sponge regularly during application to maintain a smooth finish.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Durable carbon steel construction for longevity
  • Ergonomic handle significantly reduces user fatigue
  • Ideal size for precise edge work and patch repairs
  • Solid metal tang provides excellent blade stability

Cons

  • Not suitable for large-scale wall plastering
  • Requires proper cleaning to prevent carbon steel oxidation
  • Limited reach compared to larger margin trowels

Setup, Compatibility & Care

This trowel does not require assembly. To ensure the longevity of the carbon steel blade, follow these care steps:

  1. Immediate Cleaning: Rinse the blade thoroughly with water immediately after use to remove wet plaster or cement, which can be corrosive.
  2. Drying: Wipe the blade completely dry with a clean cloth before storage to prevent rust.
  3. Maintenance: If the blade is left unused for long periods, apply a light coat of machine oil to the steel surface to protect it from oxidation.
  4. Storage: Store in a dry environment and avoid using the blade as a pry bar, as excessive force on the tip may compromise the tang.
