Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure your bare roots establish successfully, follow these steps:
- Hydration: Upon arrival, soak the roots in a bucket of lukewarm water for about 30 to 60 minutes to rehydrate them before planting.
- Planting Depth: Dig a hole large enough for the roots to spread out without bending. Ensure the crown—the point where the roots meet the stem—is level with the soil surface. Planting too deep can lead to rot; planting too shallow can cause the roots to dry out.
- Soil Preparation: Ensure the soil is free of weeds and mixed with compost or well-rotted manure for optimal growth.
- Spacing: Space plants approximately 30-40cm apart to allow for airflow, which helps prevent fungal issues.
- Ongoing Care: Water regularly, especially during dry spells. Apply a liquid fertilizer rich in potassium once the plants start flowering to boost fruit production. After the season, tidy up the foliage to prepare the plants for winter dormancy.
