Full details

The SmallRig Support with Cold Shoe Mount 5156 is an essential accessory for content creators using MagSafe-enabled iPhones for mobile photography, live streaming, or teleprompter setups. It offers a secure magnetic mounting system with dual-axis rotation for quick switching between portrait and landscape orientations, though it is exclusively compatible with MagSafe-integrated devices and requires an external case or native compatibility if a non-MagSafe phone is used.

FAQs

Can I use this with non-MagSafe phones?

Only if you attach a dedicated MagSafe-compatible magnetic ring or adapter to the back of your non-MagSafe device.

Does it include a tripod?

No, the 5156 is a mounting accessory designed to be attached to your existing tripods, cages, or selfie sticks.

What is the maximum weight capacity?

The mount supports devices up to 0.5 kg.

Can I mount a heavy microphone?

Yes, provided the total weight of your accessories does not exceed the structural limits of the mount and the stability of your base support.

Is the cold shoe removable?

The cold shoe is integrated into the base, but the top magnetic plate can be detached for custom configurations.

What material is it made of?

It is constructed from a durable mix of aluminum, silicone, and stainless steel.

Troubleshooting

Magnetic grip feels weak

Ensure the phone back is clean and that you are using a genuine MagSafe-compatible case or the naked phone without a non-magnetic cover.

Rotation shafts become loose

Use a compatible hex tool to gently tighten the screws located on the rotating shafts to restore proper resistance.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Seamless switching between landscape and portrait orientation
Strong magnetic connection for MagSafe iPhones
Flexible mounting options including cold shoe and 1/4-20 threads
Sturdy yet lightweight aluminum construction
Highly modular for custom camera rigs

Cons

Requires MagSafe-compatible phone or case
Maximum weight capacity limited to 0.5 kg
Not intended for heavy-duty DSLR setups

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To begin, ensure your iPhone has a MagSafe-compatible back or a certified MagSafe case. Simply align your phone with the magnetic plate for an instant, secure lock. When mounting to a tripod or stabilizer, screw the base into the 1/4"-20 thread until hand-tight. To use the cold shoe, slide your microphone or lighting accessory into the slot until the locking pin clicks.

Care instructions involve keeping the silicone surfaces clean to maintain grip and checking the screws on the rotating shafts periodically to ensure they remain tensioned to your preference. Do not exceed the 0.5 kg weight limit to avoid damaging the joints.
