FAQs

Is this drive compatible with PS5?

Yes, the Samsung 990 meets the technical requirements for the PlayStation 5 console storage expansion.

Do I need to install drivers?

Windows and macOS include native NVMe drivers, but using the manufacturer's management software is recommended for firmware updates.

Does this come with a heatsink?

The base model does not include a heatsink; check your motherboard manual to see if it provides an integrated M.2 heatsink.

Can I use this with a PCIe 3.0 motherboard?

Yes, it is backward compatible, but it will operate at the slower speeds allowed by the PCIe 3.0 interface.

What is the warranty period?

The Samsung 990 series typically includes a limited 5-year warranty; consult your region-specific documentation for details.

Troubleshooting

Drive not detected by BIOS

Ensure the M.2 slot is enabled in BIOS settings and the drive is fully seated in the slot.

Slow transfer speeds

Verify the drive is connected to a PCIe 4.0 enabled M.2 slot, as PCIe 3.0 slots will limit maximum bandwidth.

Drive temperatures are high

Install a dedicated M.2 heatsink and ensure there is proper case ventilation to dissipate heat.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Exceptionally fast read and write speeds
Large 2TB capacity for demanding software and files
Compact form factor compatible with most modern M.2 slots
Reliable build quality suitable for professional workloads

Cons

Requires PCIe 4.0 compatibility for maximum throughput
May require a heatsink in systems with limited airflow
Higher price point compared to entry-level SATA or older NVMe drives

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To install, ensure your motherboard has an available M.2 slot that supports NVMe PCIe 4.0. Insert the SSD into the slot at a slight angle until it clicks, then secure it using the motherboard's M.2 screw or tool-less retention clip. Once installed, initialize the drive via your operating system's disk management utility to create a partition. Regarding care, keep the drive firmware updated using manufacturer software to ensure optimal performance. Ensure the drive has adequate airflow; if your motherboard does not include an M.2 heatsink, consider installing an aftermarket cooler to maintain peak performance during sustained thermal loads.
