The Eltako GLE base load element is designed for electricians and smart home enthusiasts facing issues with dimmable lamps that glow or flicker when off, especially in systems without N connections or with induction voltages. Its key benefit is eliminating these disturbances, preventing self-ignition of LEDs on switches with orientation lighting, and potentially lowering the minimum dimming level for LEDs. A caveat is that it must be operated in parallel with the consumer and switched off simultaneously; high standby loads can interfere with its detection.

A base load element, like the Eltako GLE, provides a minimum electrical load to a circuit. This is necessary when the actual load (like some LED lamps) is too small for the dimmer or switch to detect properly, leading to issues like flickering or glowing.
This often happens because LED lamps require very little power, and even when switched off, a small amount of residual voltage or current in the circuit can keep them faintly illuminated or cause them to flicker. The GLE provides a small, constant load to prevent this.
The GLE is particularly useful in systems *without* an N-connection, where dimmers may struggle to detect the load correctly. It helps stabilize the circuit even without a dedicated neutral connection at the switch.
It is specifically designed to help with dimmable lamps, particularly LEDs, and issues related to electronic transformers and fluorescent lamp ballasts. It may not be necessary or beneficial for all lamp types.
If your dimmable lights (especially LEDs) glow faintly when off, flicker intermittently, or don't dim smoothly to very low levels, you might benefit from a base load element.
PTC stands for Positive Temperature Coefficient. It's a type of resistor whose resistance increases significantly with increasing temperature. In this application, it acts as a stable, small load.
While most beneficial with dimmers, it can also help with simple on/off switches that have orientation lighting, preventing LED lamps from self-igniting due to residual voltage.
Verify the GLE is wired in parallel with the load and switched simultaneously. Check for excessively high standby loads in the circuit that might be masking the base load effect. Ensure the GLE is correctly rated for the load.
Confirm the GLE is correctly installed in parallel. The base load should prevent the faint residual voltage from activating the LED lamps.
Ensure the GLE is properly connected. If the buzzing is severe, the driver or transformer itself might have an underlying issue, or a higher-rated base load might be needed.
Double-check all wiring connections. Ensure the GLE is not bypassed and is part of the active circuit with the intended load.
