'Second cut' refers to the coarseness of the file's teeth. It's a medium coarseness, suitable for general purpose material removal and faster than a 'smooth' cut file, but less aggressive than a 'bastard' cut file.

Due to its 'second cut' coarseness, it is not ideal for very fine finishing. For smoother finishes, a finer grit file ('smooth' or 'dead smooth' cut) would be more appropriate.

A half round file has one flat side and one rounded side, making it versatile for both flat surfaces and concave curves. A flat file has two flat sides and is primarily used for flat surfaces.

Keep the file clean by using a file brush to remove debris after each use. Store it in a dry place, preferably hung or in a tool roll, to prevent rust and protect the teeth. Avoid striking the file against hard surfaces.

This file is designed for general removal of both ferrous metals (like steel and iron) and non-ferrous metals (like aluminum, brass, and copper).

The handle is typically attached to the tang of the file blade. While not designed for easy replacement, if the handle becomes damaged, it may be possible to replace it using appropriate tools and adhesives, or by fitting a new handle.

Ensure the file is being used with the correct stroke direction (pushing forward). Check if the file teeth are clogged with debris; clean with a file brush. Verify that the material being worked on is compatible with the file's coarseness.

Store the file in a dry location away from moisture. Clean any existing rust spots with a fine steel wool or a rust remover, then dry thoroughly. Consider applying a light coat of oil for protection if storing for extended periods.

Inspect the ferrule (the metal band connecting the handle to the blade). If it is loose, the handle may need to be replaced or re-secured by a professional. For minor looseness, ensure the handle is fully seated on the tang.
