FAQs

How do I choose the correct size for my dog?

Measure your dog's girth around the widest part of their rib cage and their neck circumference. Compare these measurements to the Ruffwear sizing chart provided for the Confluence™ Life Jacket to find the best fit.

Can this life jacket be used as a regular harness?

While it has a leash attachment point, it is designed primarily as a life jacket for water activities. For everyday walks, a dedicated Ruffwear harness is recommended for optimal comfort and control.

Is the life jacket suitable for dogs who are not strong swimmers?

Yes, the strategically placed foam panels provide buoyancy to support a natural swimming position, which can be beneficial for dogs who are less confident or experienced in the water. However, always supervise your dog when they are in or near water.

How do I attach The Beacon light?

The life jacket features a dedicated light loop located on the back. Simply slide the loop of The Beacon through this attachment point to secure it for added visibility.

How often should I check the fit of the life jacket?

Always check the fit before each water activity. Ensure all straps are securely fastened and adjusted properly to prevent slippage or discomfort.

What is the warranty period for the Confluence™ Life Jacket?

Ruffwear typically offers a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Please refer to the official Ruffwear website or your purchase documentation for specific warranty details.

Can I machine wash the life jacket?

We recommend hand washing the life jacket with mild detergent in cold water. Avoid using bleach or machine washing, as this can damage the materials and affect the buoyancy. Always air dry.

Troubleshooting

Life jacket seems too tight or too loose.

Re-adjust all six points of the straps. Ensure the girth and neck are snug but do not restrict breathing or movement. Consult the sizing guide and re-measure if necessary.

Dog is uncomfortable or restricted while swimming.

Ensure the straps are properly adjusted so the jacket allows for natural leg movement. The foam panels should support, not impede, swimming motion. Some dogs may need a short period to acclimate to wearing the jacket.

Main handle feels unbalanced when lifting.

Confirm the jacket is fitted evenly and the main handle is centered on the dog's back. The fit should allow the handle to remain stable during lifting.

Reflective accents are not visible.

Reflective accents are most effective in low-light conditions when illuminated by an external light source. Ensure the jacket is clean, as dirt can obscure reflectivity.

Webbing appears stretched or saggy after use in water.

This is not typical for the water-compatible webbing. If this occurs, check the webbing for damage and contact customer support. Ensure it's being air-dried properly after use.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Offers excellent freedom of movement and comfort due to its harness-like design.
  • Strategically placed foam provides reliable buoyancy and supports a natural swimming position.
  • Dual handles make it easier to assist dogs in and out of the water or onto vessels.
  • The adjustable straps ensure a secure and customizable fit for a wide range of dog body types.
  • Durable, water-resistant materials maintain integrity and function in wet conditions.
  • Enhanced visibility features improve safety in low-light environments.

Cons

  • Requires careful measurement to ensure the correct size for optimal fit and buoyancy.
  • May not be suitable for dogs with extreme buoyancy needs or those who are not comfortable in water.
  • The secondary handle, while useful, is discreet and might be less intuitive for some users.
  • Attachment of The Beacon adds an extra step for nighttime use.
  • The harness style may require a brief adjustment period for some dogs.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Sizing: Measure your dog according to the Ruffwear sizing chart. Ensure the girth measurement is taken around the deepest part of the rib cage.
  2. Fitting: Loosen all adjustment straps. Place the life jacket over your dog, ensuring the neck opening is positioned correctly. Secure the buckles and then tighten the straps. Start with the front straps, then adjust the rear straps. The jacket should be snug but not restrictive, allowing for full movement. The main handle should be positioned on your dog's back.
  3. Leash Attachment: For added security during transport or in transitional areas, clip your dog's leash to the reinforced webbing loop on the back of the life jacket.

Compatibility:

  • Designed for dogs of various breeds and sizes. Select the appropriate size based on measurements.
  • Compatible with The Beacon™ light (sold separately) for enhanced visibility in low-light or dark conditions.

Care:

  • Washing: Hand wash with mild detergent in cold water. Do not bleach.
  • Drying: Air dry completely. Do not tumble dry or use harsh heat sources.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
