Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing: Sow seeds directly into the ground after the last frost, typically from April to May. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Plant seeds about 2-3cm deep and 50-60cm apart, as these plants require ample space.
Location: Prefers a sunny position with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Ensure the location is sheltered from strong winds if possible, although the sturdy stems offer good resistance.
Soil: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil. Amending the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting will enhance growth.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is more beneficial than frequent shallow watering.
Care: Due to its strong stems, staking is generally not required. Monitor for common pests like slugs and aphids. Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer occasionally if growth appears slow.
Harvesting Seeds: Once flowers have faded and the backs of the flower heads turn yellow and dry, you can harvest the seeds. Cut the head off, leaving a short stalk, and hang it in a dry, airy place until fully dry. Rub seeds out by hand or with a stiff brush.
