The evergreen Tamarillo grows like a tree and develops soft, hairy leaves. It is fast-growing and can reach room height as a container plant. From its lavender flowers, small, egg-shaped, red or yellow fruits emerge, which resemble a Roma tomato in shape and taste. The still slightly unripe fruits have a pleasant sweet and sour taste and are best for eating. However, there is no botanical relationship between the Tamarillo and the tomato plant, apart from the fact that they both belong to the nightshade family. The flesh of the Tamarillo can be scooped directly from the peel and added to a fruit salad or steamed like a vegetable. The Tamarillo originates from the Andean region of South America. The seeds can be propagated indoors all year round. Place the seeds on moist potting soil. Provide a bright and warm place between 20°C and 25°C and keep the soil moist. Germination usually takes about two to four weeks. The Tamarillo prefers a bright and warm place. After the plant has rooted properly in the pot, it is time to transplant it into a larger pot (10 liters). The Tamarillo needs a lot of water. During the summer, you can supply your plant every two weeks with liquid fertilizer. The ripening period of the Tamarillo fruits takes about six to eight months.
