FAQs

What is Protexin Veterinary Pro-Kolin Paste used for?

It is a dietary supplement for dogs and cats designed to support digestive health, soothe the gut lining, and help alleviate symptoms like diarrhoea, flatulence, and upset stomachs by firming faeces and balancing gut flora.

What are the main ingredients in Pro-Kolin Paste and what do they do?

Pro-Kolin contains `Probiotics` (`Enterococcus faecium`) to maintain beneficial gut bacteria, `Prebiotics` (FOS and acacia) to feed those bacteria, `Kaolin` to firm up faeces, and `Pectin` to soothe the gut lining.

How often can I give Pro-Kolin to my pet?

It can be given up to three times daily, depending on the severity of symptoms, or as advised by your veterinary surgeon. Always follow the dosage instructions based on your pet's weight.

Is Pro-Kolin suitable for both dogs and cats?

Yes, Protexin Veterinary Pro-Kolin Paste is formulated for both dogs and cats across various weight ranges.

How should I store Pro-Kolin Paste?

Store the paste in a cool, dry area, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, replace the lid securely. It has a 2-year shelf life from manufacture and remains effective until the 'Best Before End' date even after opening if stored correctly.

What is the flavour of the paste?

The paste has an artificial beef flavouring to enhance palatability and improve acceptance by pets.

What is the difference between Pro-Kolin and Pro-Kolin Advanced?

Pro-Kolin replaces the previous 'Pro-Kolin+' product, maintaining the same formulation. While 'Pro-Kolin Advanced' is also available, this guide pertains to the standard Pro-Kolin paste and does not detail specific differences with the 'Advanced' version.

Troubleshooting

My pet refuses to take the paste.

The paste is beef-flavoured for palatability, but some pets can be fussy. Try placing a small amount on their paw for them to lick off, or mix the paste with a very small amount of their favourite wet food or treat to mask the texture.

Diarrhoea persists or worsens after using Pro-Kolin.

Pro-Kolin is designed to support digestive health during minor upsets. If your pet's symptoms do not improve within 24-48 hours, or if they worsen, become severe, or are accompanied by other symptoms like vomiting or lethargy, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian immediately. Persistent digestive issues may indicate a more serious underlying condition.

I am unsure about the correct dosage.

Always refer to the dosage table provided on the packaging and in this guide. Use the dosage wheel on the syringe plunger carefully to select the precise amount. If in doubt, or if your pet's weight falls between categories, it is best to consult your veterinarian for specific advice.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Effectively supports digestive health in dogs and cats.
Helps to quickly firm up loose stools due to `Kaolin` content.
Soothes the gut lining with `Pectin`.
Promotes a healthy gut flora balance with `Probiotics` and `Prebiotics`.
Easy to administer with a palatable beef flavour and marked syringe.
Long shelf life, even after opening if stored correctly.

Cons

Not a substitute for veterinary care for severe or persistent digestive problems.
Taste may not be universally accepted by all pets.
Requires careful dosage measurement to ensure effectiveness.
Potential for temporary constipation if pet is already prone or dosage is too high due to binding agents like Kaolin.
Not intended for long-term daily use without veterinary consultation.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

This product is designed for both dogs and cats of all ages and sizes, provided the correct dosage is administered based on their weight.

Setup/First Use:

Remove the cap from the syringe.
Locate the dosage wheel on the plunger.
Rotate the wheel until it aligns with the desired dose (e.g., for a 3ml dose, set the wheel to the right of the '3' mark).
Administer the paste directly into your pet's mouth.

Compatibility:

Pro-Kolin Paste is generally well-tolerated and can be used alongside most medications, but it's always advisable to consult your veterinarian if your pet is on other treatments.

Storage and Care:

Shelf Life: Pro-Kolin has a 2-year shelf life from the date of manufacture.
After Opening: Once opened, replace the cap securely.
Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight.
Opened Product: When stored correctly, the product will remain effective until its 'Best Before End' date, even after it has been opened.
