FAQs

What kind of thinner should I use?

Use RC701/RC702 High Compatibility Thinner or other thinners intended for lacquer-based paints.

Can I use this paint with other brands of paint?

It is generally safe to use this paint with other lacquer-based paints. However, always test compatibility on a small area first.

How do I clean my airbrush after use?

Clean your airbrush immediately after use with the appropriate lacquer thinner. Disassemble the airbrush as per manufacturer's instructions to clean the nozzle, needle and paint cup.

What is the recommended air pressure for airbrushing?

Air pressure depends on your airbrush and the level of detail. Generally, start between 15-25 PSI and adjust as needed.

How many coats should I apply?

Apply several thin coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next, until the desired result is achieved.

What is the drying time?

Drying time depends on humidity and temperature, but typically 15-30 minutes per coat. Allow for a longer curing time before weathering or handling.

Do I need to prime the surface before applying the paint?

It is recommended to prime the surface before applying the AK Interactive RC820 Aluminium paint for better adhesion and a smoother finish.

Troubleshooting

Paint is not flowing smoothly through the airbrush.

Ensure the paint is properly thinned with the correct thinner. Clean the airbrush thoroughly, paying attention to the nozzle.

Paint is chipping or not adhering to the surface.

Make sure the surface is properly prepared (cleaned and primed). Apply thin coats, allowing each coat to dry completely.

The finish is not smooth or has a grainy texture.

Use a higher quality thinner. Ensure the paint is properly mixed and applied in a consistent manner. Check airbrush settings.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • High-quality lacquer base ensures durability.
  • Excellent flow properties for airbrushing, reducing clogging and ensuring a smooth finish.
  • Strong adhesion, minimizing the risk of the paint chipping or flaking.
  • The soft finish provides a realistic metallic appearance.
  • Compatible with various weathering products, allowing for detailed effects.

Cons

  • Requires the use of specific thinners (RC701/RC702 or lacquer-based) for optimal results.
  • Lacquer-based paints may have a stronger odor compared to other paint types.
  • Proper ventilation is necessary when using this product.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

  1. Preparation: Ensure the model surface is clean and free of dust, grease, or any contaminants. A primer is recommended for optimal adhesion.
  2. Thinning: Dilute with RC701/RC702 High Compatibility Thinner or other thinners suitable for lacquer-based paints. The ideal ratio may vary, so start with a ratio of 1:1 paint to thinner, adjusting as necessary.
  3. Application: Apply in thin, even coats using an airbrush. Maintain a consistent distance and air pressure for an even finish.
  4. Drying: Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. Drying times will vary based on environmental conditions and the thickness of the coat.
  5. Cleaning: Clean your airbrush immediately after use with a suitable lacquer thinner. This prevents the paint from drying and clogging the airbrush.
