MADI (Multichannel Audio Digital Interface), also standardized as AES10, is a digital audio interface that allows for the transmission of multiple channels of audio over a single coaxial or optical cable. The ATEM Microphone Converter embeds its 4 analog audio channels into a MADI stream.
The ATEM Microphone Converter is specifically designed to expand the MADI input on ATEM Television Studio switchers. Its direct integration relies on this MADI port. For other switchers, compatibility would depend on their MADI input capabilities.
Each ATEM Microphone Converter provides 4 analog audio inputs. You can daisy-chain multiple converters to expand beyond 4 inputs, embedding additional channels into the MADI stream.
Using 8 ADCs (Analog-to-Digital Converters) per input allows the converter to achieve an ultra-high dynamic range of 131dB(A). This captures a wider range of audio levels, from very quiet to very loud, with exceptional detail and clarity without distortion.
MADI typically uses BNC coaxial cables (for AES10 standard) or optical cables. Ensure you use appropriate, high-quality MADI cables for reliable signal transmission.
While the converter has physical Mic/Line and Phantom Power switches, the ultra-low noise design allows the ATEM switcher to apply digital gain control in very fine ±0.1dB steps without introducing noise from an analog gain stage. This is handled within the ATEM switcher's software or control interface.
The ATEM Microphone Converter has a width of 200 mm, a depth of 125 mm, and a height of 40.6 mm.
Verify that the MADI cable is securely connected to the ATEM Television Studio. Check that the audio source is properly connected to the XLR/TRS input and that the Mic/Line switch is set correctly. Ensure phantom power is enabled if using condenser mics.
Reduce the input gain level using the Mic/Line switch. If using microphones, ensure they are not too close to the sound source or that the sound source is not excessively loud. Check the connected audio source's output level.
Ensure the phantom power switch is activated for the specific input channel. Verify that the connected microphone requires phantom power; dynamic microphones typically do not.
Confirm that the MADI output of the upstream converter is correctly connected to the MADI input of the downstream converter. Ensure all converters are powered on and properly connected. Check MADI channel assignment within the ATEM switcher.
