Block Plane - Stanley - No.220

A block plane is primarily designed for cutting end grain and for making fine adjustments to wood components, such as fitting parts to tight tolerances, chamfering edges, and removing glue lines.

The depth of cut is typically adjusted using a screw mechanism at the rear of the plane. Turn the screw to raise or lower the blade relative to the sole.

Alignment is usually adjusted by gently tapping the sides of the iron with a small mallet or block of wood until it is square to the mouth of the plane.

While it can remove thin shavings from surfaces, its compact size makes it less efficient for large-area planing compared to larger bench planes. It is best suited for smaller tasks and precise work.

The low bed angle (bevel up) allows the blade to slice through wood fibers more easily, which is particularly effective for cutting end grain without tear-out.

The frequency of sharpening depends on usage. You should sharpen the blade when you notice it starts to dull and is no longer cutting cleanly or easily.

The body of this block plane is made of fine grey iron, which provides durability and stability.

Ensure the blade is sharp and properly set. Check that the depth of cut is not set too deep. Verify the alignment of the blade is square to the sole.

Ensure the adjustment mechanism is clean and free of debris. Gentle taps with a wooden mallet may help free stiff adjustments, but avoid excessive force.

This often occurs with end grain. Reduce the depth of cut significantly. Ensure the blade is extremely sharp and honed to a low angle. Try planing at a steeper angle to the grain direction.

Clean the sole of the plane and remove any pitch or residue. Lightly wax the sole if necessary.
