FAQs

What is the primary function of the Catnic CG90/100 Lintel?

To provide structural support across a cavity in a wall, usually above openings like windows and doors, while also providing thermal efficiency and moisture protection.

What type of walls is this lintel designed for?

It is designed for cavity walls with a width between 90mm and 105mm.

What is duplex corrosion protection?

It's a protective coating on the steel lintel that helps prevent rust and corrosion, extending the lifespan of the product.

Does this lintel include insulation?

Yes, it has built-in insulation to enhance thermal performance and minimize cold bridging.

What is the recommended end bearing for the lintel?

A minimum of 150mm on both sides is recommended for optimal load distribution and stability.

Can I raise both inner and outer leaves simultaneously?

Yes, both inner and outer leaves can be raised together for easier and faster installation.

What is the purpose of the plaster key?

The plaster key provides a surface for plaster to grip onto, ensuring it adheres properly to the lintel.

Troubleshooting

The lintel doesn't fit the opening.

Double-check the measurements of both the lintel and the wall opening to ensure they match. Verify that the cavity wall width is between 90mm and 105mm.

The lintel appears to be sagging or bending after installation.

Ensure that the lintel has the correct end bearing (minimum 150mm) on both sides and that it's adequately supported during the build. Check the load being applied to the lintel is within its capacity.

Difficulties with plaster adhesion.

Make sure the plaster key is clean and free of debris. Use appropriate plastering techniques and materials to ensure proper adhesion.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Durable due to duplex corrosion protection.
Improves thermal efficiency with built-in insulation.
Simplifies installation with an open back profile.
Suitable for a range of applications, including domestic and light commercial structures.
Integrated DPC helps prevent moisture ingress.

Cons

Requires precise measurements for correct fit.
Installation requires adherence to load-bearing guidelines, including proper end bearing.
Unit weight varies depending on length, which may affect handling.
Requires one course of blockwork before flooring or roof elements are installed for optimal performance.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Preparation: Ensure the cavity wall width is between 90mm and 105mm. Check that the inner leaf is between 100–115mm and outer leaf is 100–102mm.
Placement: Position the lintel in the opening, ensuring a minimum 150mm end bearing on both sides for load distribution.
Support: Use appropriate support during installation.
Installation: The inner and outer leaves can be raised together. Ensure the lintel is level and securely bedded in mortar.
Finishing: Complete the wall construction, ensuring that the lintel is fully integrated.

Care:

No specific care is required. However, it's good practice to protect the lintel from excessive exposure to the elements during installation. Regular inspection is recommended as part of routine building maintenance.
