Product Information

Full details

The RØDE DeadWombat is an essential accessory for professional videographers and field recordists who use the RØDE Blimp system in demanding outdoor environments. It provides superior wind noise reduction through its acoustically transparent artificial fur, ensuring clear audio captures even in high-wind conditions, though users should note it is specifically designed for the Blimp and is not a universal fit for all microphones.

FAQs

Is the DeadWombat compatible with microphones not inside a Blimp?

No, it is specifically designed to be used as a cover for the RØDE Blimp system.

Can I wash the DeadWombat in a washing machine?

It is not recommended. Hand wash only with cold water and mild detergent if absolutely necessary, then air dry.

How much does the DeadWombat weigh?

The DeadWombat weighs 124 grams.

Will this block wind completely?

It provides extreme wind protection, but in gale-force winds, some noise may still be present depending on the microphone's sensitivity.

What are the dimensions of the DeadWombat?

It measures 170 mm in width, 515 mm in height, and 170 mm in depth.

Troubleshooting

Wind noise still audible in recording

Ensure the draw-cord is pulled completely tight at the base of the Blimp to prevent air leaks.

Fur fibers appear matted or clumpy

Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft brush to gently disentangle the artificial fur, restoring its original loft.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent wind noise suppression in harsh outdoor conditions
  • Easy to install and remove via the draw-cord system
  • Lightweight design prevents fatigue during long shoots
  • Provides added physical protection for expensive microphones

Cons

  • Compatibility is strictly limited to the RØDE Blimp
  • Artificial fur requires regular maintenance to stay effective
  • Bulky storage footprint when not in use

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To install, simply slide the DeadWombat over the outer mesh of your RØDE Blimp. Use the integrated draw-cord to tighten the opening around the handle base, ensuring no gaps exist where air could penetrate.

Regarding care, the artificial fur should be kept dry. If the windshield becomes damp or dirty, gently shake it out and let it air dry in a clean, ventilated area. You can periodically use a soft-bristled brush to keep the fur fibers from matting, which ensures the acoustic transparency remains consistent over years of heavy use.
