FAQs

Does this handle fit all pick axes?

It is designed to fit standard pick axe and mattock eyes. However, because different manufacturers have slight variations, you may need to file or shave the handle slightly for a perfect fit.

What is the length of the handle?

The handle is 915mm (36 inches) long.

Does this handle come with a wedge?

No, the handle is supplied as a single unit and does not include wedges.

Is the handle pre-finished?

Yes, it comes with a protective waxed finish to prevent moisture ingress and improve comfort.

What standard does this handle meet?

It is manufactured to BS 3823 BW/BR British Standard specifications.

Troubleshooting

Head feels loose on the handle

Ensure the wedge is driven fully into the top of the handle to expand the wood against the eye walls. If the gap persists, replace the wedge.

Splinters developing on the grip

Lightly sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper and re-apply a wood treatment oil or wax to seal the fibers.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Meets rigorous British Standard specifications for quality
High-density hardwood offers superior durability
Wax finish reduces friction and prevents splintering
Provides a comfortable and traditional feel during use
Standardized dimensions ensure compatibility with most pick heads

Cons

Requires manual fitting into the tool head
Wooden handles can dry out or crack if left in extreme humidity conditions
Does not include wedges or hanging hardware
Lacks the vibration-dampening properties of some composite materials

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To install, ensure the eye of your pick axe or mattock is free from debris or old handle fragments. The handle may require slight shaving of the shoulder to achieve a custom friction fit. Once seated, use a metal or wooden wedge to expand the end of the handle to lock the head in place securely.

For care, store the tool in a dry area to prevent the wood from absorbing excess moisture or becoming excessively brittle. Periodically applying a light coat of linseed oil can help keep the wood fibers supple and prevent cracking over many years of service.
