ForgeFix Wing Nuts & Washers provide a convenient alternative to standard Hex Nuts, and allow hand...ForgeFix Wing Nuts & Washers provide a convenient alternative to standard Hex Nuts, and allow hand tightening rather than having to use spanners or other tools. Also known as a 'Thumbscrew', the wing nut has two large metal 'wings' for easy tightening and loosening. Both the nuts and washers are bright zinc plated for increased corrosion resistance. APPLICATION: Where ever a hand tightened fastening is required. Used where frequent adjustments are needed or part removal can be made quickly at some later stage. Can be used with all threaded bolt products. Zinc coatings prevent oxidation of the protected metal to create a longer lasting finish. It does this by forming a barrier and by acting as a sacrificial anode if this barrier is damaged. Zinc oxide is a fine white dust that (in contrast to iron oxide) does not trigger a breakdown of the substrates surface integrity as it is formed. The zinc oxide, if left intact, can act as a barrier to further oxidation, in a way similar to the protection afforded to aluminium and stainless steels by their oxide layers. Supplied in a handy ForgePack.
This guide is for DIY enthusiasts and professionals who need a quick and easy fastening solution. The ForgeFix Wing Nut & Washer (M8) offers a convenient, tool-free alternative to standard hex nuts, allowing for rapid hand tightening and loosening, ideal for applications requiring frequent adjustments. A potential caveat is their lower torque capacity compared to traditional nuts, making them unsuitable for high-stress structural applications.

FAQs
What does 'M8' mean?
'M8' refers to the metric thread size, indicating a nominal diameter of 8 millimeters for the bolt or screw it is designed to fit.
Can I use these for structural support?
No, ForgeFix Wing Nuts & Washers are intended for applications where hand-tightened fastening is sufficient. They do not provide the high clamping force required for structural applications.
How do I prevent them from loosening?
For applications where vibration is a concern, consider using a thread-locking compound or a secondary locking mechanism. Ensure they are tightened as much as possible by hand.
Are these suitable for outdoor use?
The bright zinc plating offers good corrosion resistance for general use. However, for prolonged exposure to harsh weather, they may eventually corrode. Consider stainless steel alternatives for severe conditions.
What is the purpose of the washer?
The washer helps to distribute the clamping force over a larger area of the material being fastened, preventing damage to softer surfaces and ensuring a more secure fit.
Where can I buy other sizes?
Other sizes such as M6, M10, and M12 are available under different ForgeFix product codes.
Troubleshooting
Wing nut is difficult to turn by hand.
Check if the bolt threads are clean and undamaged. Remove any debris or rust from the threads. Ensure you are using the correct M8 size.
Wing nut spins freely and does not tighten.
Verify that the bolt has sufficient thread engagement. Ensure the nut is not stripped and is properly seated against the material or washer.
Corrosion is visible on the wing nut or washer.
Clean the affected area with a dry cloth. For mild corrosion, a gentle wire brush can be used. Consider applying a protective coating or replacing the fastener if significant damage is present.
Washer feels loose on the nut.
Some wing nuts are supplied with separate washers. Ensure the washer is correctly positioned against the base of the wing nut before tightening.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Enables fast, hand-tightened assembly and disassembly.
Bright zinc plating offers good corrosion resistance.
Eliminates the need for tools, saving time and effort.
Suitable for applications requiring frequent adjustments.
Washers help protect surfaces and distribute load evenly.
Cons
Lower torque capacity compared to standard hex nuts.
May loosen over time under vibration.
Not suitable for heavy-duty or structural applications.
Limited range of sizes compared to standard nuts.
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Ensure the M8 bolt or threaded rod is clean and free of debris.
Place the ForgeFix Wing Nut onto the threads, followed by the washer if not pre-assembled.
Thread the wing nut onto the bolt by hand until snug.
Tighten further by gripping the wings and rotating clockwise until the desired hand-tight tension is achieved.
Compatibility:
Designed for use with M8 threaded bolts, rods, and screws.
Can be used with a wide range of materials including wood, metal, and plastic.
Ensure the bolt's thread pitch matches the M8 standard.
Care:
Clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust.
Avoid abrasive cleaners which can damage the zinc plating.
For prolonged outdoor use, occasional re-application of a rust inhibitor may be beneficial if significant corrosion is observed.
