Taper taps have a gradually increasing thread at the start, making them easier to start in a hole. Plug taps have a shorter taper, providing better thread accuracy and are used after the taper tap has started the thread.

Use a cutting oil specifically designed for tapping and dieing. This will lubricate the process, reduce friction, and prevent the tools from overheating.
