A clock spring, also known as an airbag clock spring or steering column assembly, is a component that maintains electrical connections between the steering wheel and the vehicle's other electrical systems while allowing the steering wheel to rotate.
If the clock spring fails, the airbag, horn, and steering wheel-mounted controls (like cruise control) may stop working.
Due to the complexity of the airbag system, installation should be performed by a qualified mechanic.
The clock spring is located behind the steering wheel, within the steering column.
Symptoms include a non-functional horn, an illuminated airbag warning light, and malfunctioning steering wheel controls. Also, a clicking or grinding noise when turning the steering wheel could indicate an issue.
