Product Information

Full details

The WD Elements Portable Hard Drive offers a reliable and high-capacity storage solution for value-conscious consumers on the go. Its primary benefit is providing 5TB of portable storage with fast data transfer rates via USB 3.0/3.2 Gen 1, allowing for effortless backup of large files like photos and videos. A key consideration is that while it's ready for Windows out of the box, Mac users will need to reformat it before use.

FAQs

Does the WD Elements Portable 5TB drive require an external power adapter?

No, the WD Elements Portable Hard Drive is entirely powered through its USB connection. Simply plug the USB cable into your computer, and it will draw the necessary power.

Is this drive compatible with macOS?

Yes, it is compatible with macOS, but it comes pre-formatted for Windows. You will need to reformat the drive using Apple's 'Disk Utility' application before you can write files to it on a Mac. This process will erase any existing data on the drive.

What is the difference between USB 3.0 and USB 3.2 Gen 1?

USB 3.2 Gen 1 is the new naming convention for what was previously known as USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 1. They all offer the same maximum transfer speed of 5 Gbps. The drive is compatible with these speeds.

How much actual usable storage capacity does the 5TB drive have?

Due to differences in how storage manufacturers and operating systems calculate capacity (decimal vs. binary), the actual usable space will be slightly less than 5TB, typically around 4.54TB, once formatted.

Can I use this drive to back up my PlayStation or Xbox game console?

Yes, many modern game consoles support external USB hard drives for storing games and media. Please refer to your console's specific documentation for instructions on how to format and use external storage.

What should I do if the drive feels warm during use?

It is normal for external hard drives to generate some heat during operation, especially during prolonged data transfers. As long as it's not excessively hot to the touch or causing performance issues, it's generally not a concern. Ensure it has adequate ventilation.

Troubleshooting

Drive is not detected by my computer.

First, ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the drive and a working USB port on your computer. Try a different USB port, ideally a USB 3.0 port if available. If using a desktop, try a port on the back of the computer. On Windows, check 'Disk Management' (right-click Start > Disk Management). On Mac, check 'Disk Utility' (Applications > Utilities). The drive might need to be initialized or formatted.

My data transfer speeds are slow.

Verify that the drive is connected to a USB 3.0 or USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on your computer. Connections to USB 2.0 ports will result in significantly slower speeds. Also, ensure there are no other intensive background processes running on your computer that might be consuming system resources.

I can see the drive on my Mac, but I can't save files to it.

This typically means the drive is formatted for Windows (NTFS) and is read-only on macOS. You will need to reformat the drive using Disk Utility for full read/write compatibility with Mac. Remember that reformatting will erase all data on the drive.

The drive disconnects randomly during use.

Ensure the USB cable is not loose. Try connecting the drive to a different USB port or even a different computer to rule out port issues. For laptops, ensure power saving settings are not configured to turn off USB devices. For desktop computers, ensure sufficient power supply from the USB port.

Pros and Cons

Massive 5TB storage capacity for extensive file collections.
Fast data transfer speeds with USB 3.0 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 connectivity.
Portable and lightweight design ideal for travel and on-the-go use.
Simple plug-and-play setup for Windows users.
Backward compatible with older USB 2.0 ports for broader device support.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup Instructions

For Windows PCs:

Plug the included USB cable into the WD Elements Portable Hard Drive.
Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port on your Windows computer.
The drive should be automatically recognized and appear as a new drive letter in 'This PC' (or 'My Computer'). You can begin transferring files immediately.

For Mac Computers:

Plug the included USB cable into the WD Elements Portable Hard Drive.
Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port on your Mac.
The drive will likely appear on your desktop but will be read-only or prompt for initialization. You will need to reformat the drive using 'Disk Utility' for full read/write compatibility with macOS.
To reformat: Open 'Disk Utility' (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility). Select the WD Elements drive, click 'Erase', choose 'APFS' or 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' as the format, and 'GUID Partition Map' as the scheme, then click 'Erase'. Warning: This will delete all data on the drive.

Compatibility

Operating Systems:
Windows 10, 8.1, 7 (ready out of the box)
macOS (requires reformatting)
USB Ports:
USB 3.0 (for fastest transfer speeds)
USB 3.2 Gen 1 (equivalent to USB 3.0 speeds)
USB 2.0 (backward compatible, but with slower transfer speeds)

Care and Maintenance

Physical Handling: The drive is portable but not ruggedized. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts.
Environment: Keep the drive away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity. Store it in a cool, dry place.
Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the exterior of the drive. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
Eject Safely: Always "safely remove hardware" or "eject" the drive from your operating system before unplugging the USB cable to prevent data corruption.
Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Western Digital support website for any available firmware updates for optimal performance and compatibility.
