Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting:
- Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil.
- Sow seeds directly into the ground after the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 10°C (50°F).
- Plant seeds about 5cm (2 inches) deep and 15-20cm (6-8 inches) apart.
- Provide a sturdy support system, such as a trellis, netting, or poles, for the vines to climb.
Compatibility:
These runner beans are compatible with most standard garden soils and companion plants. Avoid planting near other legumes that might compete for nutrients or attract similar pests.
Care:
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to maintain soil moisture. Aim for consistent moisture without waterlogging.
- Feeding: Light feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer once pods begin to form can enhance yield.
- Support: Gently train young shoots onto the support structure as they grow.
- Harvesting: Pick pods regularly when they are young and tender to encourage further production and prevent them from becoming tough.
