Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost, or start them indoors 2-3 weeks prior. Provide a strong support structure, such as netting, canes, or a trellis, for the climbing vines. Aim for a planting distance of around 30cm (12in) apart.
Compatibility:
Thrives in full sun. Prefers well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Companion planting with sweet peas and nasturtiums is recommended for improved pollination and pest deterrence.
Care:
- Watering: Water regularly and deeply, especially as flowers develop and pods form. Avoid letting the soil dry out.
- Feeding: Apply a liquid feed every 14 days during mid-summer to support continued cropping.
- Mulching: Apply a thick mulch of organic matter around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
- Pinching: Once the plants reach the top of their supports, pinch out the tips to encourage bushier growth and more flowers/pods.
- Harvesting: Pick beans regularly, ideally when young and tender, to ensure the best quality and prolong the cropping period. Continuous harvesting stimulates further production.
