The Minerva Core Range Fleece Back Soft Shell Coating Fabric is an ideal choice for dressmakers and DIY enthusiasts looking to construct durable, weather-resistant outerwear. Featuring a functional, plain-finish outer layer and a cozy fleece-lined interior, this medium-to-heavyweight fabric provides excellent structure for jackets, capes, and coats. While its 145cm width makes project planning efficient, its distinct thickness requires specific sewing techniques to ensure clean, professional seams without unnecessary bulk.

It is designed as a soft shell coating, which provides good weather resistance for general outerwear, though it is not rated as a fully waterproof technical fabric.
Yes, its durability and warmth make it an excellent choice for children's winter coats and jackets.
If needed for lapels or plackets, use a fusible interfacing suitable for mid-weight fabrics, but always test on a scrap first to ensure it bonds correctly without damaging the coating.
Due to the thickness of the fleece, you may prefer to use Hong Kong seam finishes or bias tape binding to reduce bulk rather than traditional double-fold techniques.
This fabric is generally stable with very minimal mechanical stretch, making it easy to handle for precise pattern matching.
Use a walking foot or Teflon foot to help the fabric glide under the presser foot and increase your stitch length slightly.
Ensure you are using a sharp needle suited for medium-weight fabrics and reduce presser foot pressure if your machine allows.
Avoid unpicking seams; use Wonder Clips or pins within the seam allowance to hold pieces together rather than pins on the main surface.
To ensure your project lasts, pre-wash the fabric at 30°C to allow for any minor settling. When cutting, use sharp shears or a rotary cutter to ensure a smooth edge through the layered material. Use a medium-to-large universal or sharp needle (size 90/14 or 100/16) to pierce the density of the soft shell safely. For pressing, always test a scrap piece first; use a pressing cloth and low-to-medium heat to prevent damaging the outer coating of the fabric. Avoid using heavy steam directly on the right side of the fabric to maintain the integrity of the finish.
