This pattern is labeled 'Easy,' making it suitable for confident beginners or intermediate sewers. You should be familiar with basic sewing machine operation, straight stitching, and understanding pattern markings.
Light to medium-weight woven fabrics are ideal. Good choices include cotton, linen, rayon challis, denim, chambray, or lightweight twill. Avoid very thick or very stretchy fabrics unless you have experience altering patterns for them.
Yes, New Look patterns typically include a 5/8" (1.5 cm) seam allowance unless otherwise specified directly on the pattern piece or in the instructions. Always confirm this before cutting.
Always choose your pattern size based on your current body measurements (waist and hip) and not your ready-to-wear clothing size. Consult the 'Body Measurements' chart on the pattern envelope and cut the size that most closely matches your measurements.
Yes, if you prefer a simpler look or do not need pockets, you can simply omit the pocket pieces and skip the steps for attaching them. This will not affect the overall construction of the wrap skirt.
The pattern envelope contains a 'Fabric Requirements' chart. This chart lists the yardage needed for each skirt view and size, based on different fabric widths (e.g., 45" or 60"). Ensure you check the correct view and size for your project.
Typically, you'll need coordinating thread. Depending on the specific view, you might also need elastic, buttons, or other fasteners. The pattern envelope and instructions will list all required notions for each specific view.
Before cutting, always compare your body measurements to the pattern's size chart. If a size falls between two, consider blending sizes or making a muslin (test garment) for critical areas like the waist. Small adjustments can be made at side seams.
Double-check your waist measurement against the pattern. Ensure you cut the correct size. The 'wrap' often relies on ties or buttons; verify they are placed accurately and securely according to instructions. Consider adding extra overlap if desired for more coverage.
Accuracy is key for pockets. Ensure you transferred all pattern markings (dots, notches) to your fabric. Use a ruler and fabric marker to precisely position the pockets before stitching. Pin carefully and baste if necessary before final sewing.
This is common with certain woven fabrics. Finish all raw seam edges immediately after stitching using a zigzag stitch, an overlock stitch (if you have a serger), or French seams for a clean finish. Ensure your chosen fabric isn't prone to excessive fraying for your skill level.
Sometimes a step can be confusing. Re-read it carefully. Look at the accompanying diagrams. Search for online tutorials or videos for similar skirt construction techniques (e.g., 'how to sew a wrap skirt waistband'). Sewing communities or local classes can also offer guidance.
