A second cut file has finer teeth than a bastard cut file, providing a smoother finish but removing material more slowly. Bastard cut files are coarser and remove material faster.
While hardened and tempered, this file is best suited for soft to medium-hard metals and wood. It is not designed for aggressively shaping hardened steel, which would require specialized files like a carbide grit file.
Most file handles have a tapered hole. Insert the tang (the pointed end) of the file firmly into the hole and tap the end of the handle lightly on a solid surface to seat the tang securely.
A half-round file has one flat side and one rounded side. This allows it to be used on flat surfaces, concave curves, and internal corners.
