The evergreen shrub with fragrant foliage and numerous small spring flowers is perfect for cultivation as a potted plant and can always provide you with the popular seasoning for soups and stews, as well as for fish and meat dishes. Fresh bay leaves naturally have a stronger aroma than commercially available dried leaves. Not only in ancient Rome, the victorious field commander wore the laurel wreath - to this day it is considered a special honor and a symbol of glory and peace. The bay tree originally comes from Asia, but is widespread as a typical characteristic plant in the Mediterranean region. Further north, it can only survive in areas with a mild winter as it is not frost hardy. The propagation of seeds indoors is possible all year round. Place the seeds for about 24 hours in a bowl with lukewarm water. Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep in moist potting compost and cover the seed container with clear film. Place the seed container in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 20° and 25° Celsius and keep the soil moist. Water your plant sparingly, but regularly with low-lime water and avoid waterlogging. During the winter, the bay tree should be given a bright and cool place with a temperature of around 5°C and a maximum of 10° Celsius.
