Product Information

Full details

The Intellinet Solutions Cat5e Patch Cable is designed for reliable network connectivity, offering clear and secure data transmissions for home and office networks. It's ideal for connecting network devices like modems, routers, switches, or patch panels, ensuring consistent performance for 10/100/1000BASE-T networks. While robust with a PVC sheath and strain relief, the Copper-Clad Aluminium (CCA) conductors may offer slightly less conductivity than pure copper in highly demanding scenarios.

FAQs

What is the difference between Cat5e and Cat6 cables?

Cat5e cables support speeds up to 1000 Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet) and frequencies up to 100 MHz. Cat6 cables support higher frequencies (up to 250 MHz) and are designed for faster speeds and better performance in demanding environments, though they also support Gigabit Ethernet.

What does SF/UTP (S-FTP) mean?

SF/UTP means the cable has overall shielding (U/FTP - Foiled/Unshielded Twisted Pair) and individually shielded twisted pairs (S-FTP - Shielded/Foiled Twisted Pair). This Intellinet cable specifically uses SF/UTP, which refers to overall foil and braid shielding with unshielded twisted pairs, offering good protection against interference.

Is this cable suitable for PoE (Power over Ethernet)?

Cat5e cables, including this one, can generally support PoE. However, the effectiveness and heat generated can depend on the power delivered and the cable's construction. For high-power PoE applications, cables with pure copper conductors might be preferred.

What is CCA and why is it used?

CCA stands for Copper-Clad Aluminium. It uses an aluminium core coated with copper. CCA is less expensive than pure copper, making the cable more affordable. However, pure copper offers better conductivity and flexibility, which can be important for signal integrity and high-performance networking.

How long can an Ethernet cable be?

The maximum recommended length for standard Ethernet cables (including Cat5e) is 100 meters (328 feet) to maintain reliable signal quality and speed.

Can I use this cable for outdoor or in-wall installations?

This cable has a standard PVC sheath and is intended for indoor use. It is not rated for outdoor exposure to UV light, moisture, or extreme temperatures. For in-wall installations, consider using plenum-rated or riser-rated cables as required by local building codes.

Troubleshooting

No network connection or intermittent connection.

Ensure both ends of the cable are securely plugged into their respective ports. Test the cable by swapping it with a known working cable. Check network device settings and status lights. Verify the cable is not physically damaged.

Slow network speeds.

Confirm that the cable is connected to Gigabit Ethernet ports on both devices if Gigabit speeds are expected. Ensure the cable is not damaged and that there are no excessive bends. Check the network configuration and the performance of connected devices. Consider if the CCA conductors are a limiting factor for your specific high-demand use case.

Connector tab broken during installation.

The snagless boot is designed to protect the connector tab. If the tab still breaks, the cable may need to be replaced. Handle connectors carefully, especially in tight spaces.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Provides reliable data transmission for standard network speeds.
  • Durable construction with strain relief and snagless boots.
  • Shielding offers protection against interference.
  • Universal RJ-45 connectors for wide compatibility.
  • Adequate length (15m) for various installation needs.

Cons

  • Uses Copper-Clad Aluminium (CCA) conductors, which may not perform as well as pure copper in certain high-demand applications.
  • SF/UTP shielding can make the cable slightly less flexible than unshielded alternatives.
  • Not rated for higher-speed networking standards like Cat6 or Cat6a.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup: Simply plug one RJ-45 connector into the desired network port on your device (e.g., computer, router, switch) and the other RJ-45 connector into the corresponding network port on your target device or network infrastructure (e.g., wall jack, patch panel). Ensure a secure click when connecting.

Compatibility: This Cat5e cable is compatible with all standard networking devices that utilize RJ-45 Ethernet ports, including 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet) networks. It will also work with older network standards.

Care:

  • Avoid sharp bends or kinks in the cable, as this can damage the internal conductors.
  • Keep the cable away from extreme heat sources or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
  • Clean the connectors gently with a dry, lint-free cloth if they appear dusty. Do not use liquids or solvents.
  • Store the cable loosely coiled if not in use to prevent permanent deformation.
