FAQs

Can this chisel be used on concrete?

No, this is specifically designed for metalworking. Using it on masonry or concrete will damage the hardened edge.

What does the 57-59 HRC rating mean?

It refers to the Rockwell C Scale hardness, indicating the tool is tempered for high toughness and edge retention in metal.

How do I maintain the zinc plating?

Keep the tool clean and free of moisture. A light coating of mineral oil will help maintain the finish.

What is the primary use for the 29mm blade width?

The 29mm width is ideal for general cutting, splitting, and deburring metal parts in shop environments.

Is it safe to strike this with a sledgehammer?

For most applications, a standard ball-peen or club hammer is recommended to maintain control and avoid damaging the tool.

Troubleshooting

Cutting edge becoming dull or chipped

Re-sharpen the edge carefully using a grindstone, ensuring the 60-degree angle is maintained to prevent overheating the metal.

Mushrooming at the striking end

Immediately remove excess material with a bench grinder to prevent pieces from breaking off during future strikes.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • High hardness range ensures excellent edge retention
  • Zinc-plated coating provides superior rust resistance
  • Ideal 60-degree angle for versatile metalworking
  • Sturdy 250mm length provides significant leverage

Cons

  • Not suitable for masonry or concrete work
  • Requires professional striking tools for safety
  • Zinc coating may wear down over heavy extended use

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the longevity of the Facom 262A.25, follow these guidelines:

  1. Striking: Use a heavy-duty ball-peen hammer or a mallet with a softer face to avoid premature mushrooming of the handle.
  2. Maintenance: Periodically inspect the striking end. If mushrooming occurs, grind the head back to a smooth, flat surface to prevent metal splinters.
  3. Storage: Store in a dry, ventilated toolbox. Use a protective edge guard to keep the cutting edge protected from contact with other hardened tools.
  4. Cleaning: Wipe down with a light machine oil after use to supplement the zinc-plated finish and prevent surface oxidation.
